Random Acts Of Kindness

Random acts of kindness truly make my heart melt. Like most people, in my day to day life, I have a tendency to become so consumed by myself and my own trivial dramas that I often forget to give back to others. And so, as dumb as it may sound, every now and then I have to actually make a conscious effort to remind myself of just how fortunate I am and that it’s not always about me, myself and I.

Since the birth of my nephew and niece, it’s slowly but surely become clear to me that all in all words mean nothing and a person is purely a reflection of their actions. I don’t know about you, but I want to be able to say that I’m proud of my reflection.

Offering to help someone with their bags up/down a flight of stairs; giving up your seat on the train for somebody in better need of it; dishing out a compliment; making somebody a cup of tea or squeezing them tight when you know they’ve had a hard day; holding the door open for the person behind you; asking someone how their day was and actually listening and caring about what they have to say. They’re such small actions but trust me when I say that they mean so much to the person on the receiving end.

Good deeds are synonymous with a big heart, I really believe that. And in a world that can often seem so self-obsessed and hateful, it’s reassuring to know that selfless acts of kindness still take place every day and that not everybody’s intentions are impure.

So I’m going to try this new thing where I do one random act of kindness a day (more than one if I remember to!). I’m starting by joining a 12 mile sponsored walk over the weekend to raise awareness for mental health, something that I’ve discussed in an earlier post. It’s definitely a worthwhile cause and I’m proud to be able to say that I’m finally doing my bit to help.

And so the next time you start to feel you like the world revolves around you, stop, readjust your brain and go do something nice for somebody else instead. You can thank me later. 😛

  1. I love RAOK and often try to do them. Things are nicer when you help in some small way. I’ve also learned to accept help too – because that’s important for those wanting to help. It’s win-win really 🙂 Good luck with the walk!
