Horoscopes

So I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while now: are star signs trustworthy?

I know that it’s a huge generalisation to make but in my experience people tend to possess certain character traits depending on their respective zodiac signs. For instance, Leos are usually assertive, Scorpios are known to be passionate, Cancerians are notorious for their emotional tendencies, etc etc. And I can’t deny that I retain almost all of the qualities that an Aries is ‘expected’ to have, as do most other Ariens that I know.

All this horoscope-talk takes place in my office on almost a daily basis (which probably explains why it’s been on my mind so much as of lately!). I’ve been assured that the main reason for why I get along so well with a couple of my work colleagues is because the three of us happen to belong to the fire signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, which I’m told are extremely compatible. The happy idealist inside me proclaims, ‘of course, that explains it!’ while the snarly sceptic says, ‘sure buddy, whatever you say’.

If we go along with the ‘happy idealist’ wave of thinking for a minute, is it then acceptable to make judgement calls on people based solely on their star signs? Hmmm I think not. That’s essentially ‘judging a book by its cover’ and I’m pretty sure that we’re not supposed to do that…

While you do indeed get people who personify their star signs to a T, on the other side of the coin are people like my dad. He shares absolutely NO similarities with his star sign. He’s a walking-talking example of why horoscopes are complete hogswash. So should people like him be treated as the exception or the rule? My sentiments are that it’s entirely up for interpretation.

Now while I’m on the fence when it comes to using horoscopes as a character analysing tool, I know where I stand on one thing: I don’t believe that star signs can be referred to as a means of mapping out/predicting anybody’s life pattern. All of the daily newspaper/website horoscopes that I come across are so general and vague that anybody could relate to all twelve of them if they really wanted to!

My personal opinion is that a lot of people endorse astrology because it allows them to feel as if they’re in control of their lives. They relish in the abundance of answers that come along with it. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. We all yearn for answers and reassurance, to feel like we’re moving forward in the right direction and as if we’re connected to others. So although I don’t necessarily share the viewpoint, I understand it and I don’t judge it.

I guess to put it simply I think that as a character analysing tool horoscopes can be fun to look into and at times seem freakishly accurate, but as a predictor of the future, for me… not so much.

  1. Horoscopes are an interesting thing, who and how did they decide what should represent each sign? I’m a Taurus and a lot of the general type sign apply to myself, but it’s a tricky one,lol … I don’t even know what I’m really saying, lol

  2. Horoscopes are all but fun. I am a Capricorn, we have 4 of those in my family, trust me, we all differ so much. I am of course the finest of them all, cool calm and easy to get on with. Lol.

  3. I agree. I believe they can be shockingly true when it comes to describing a person’s traits or qualities but not at all when it starts talking about your future.

  4. Good post. Some where does it say Pisces are d-bags? Because the last time someone asked me what my sign was, I took a piece of paper, wrote F-Off and held it up, for them to read. I guess I don’t put too much stock in horoscopes 🙂

  5. I find horoscopes interesting, typically the personality thing is usually spot-on. Buttttttt…when someone is telling me that the moon has aligned with mars to bring me the love of my life on the 14th….c’mon. NOPE.

  6. I think that daily horoscopes can be incredibly generic as they are simply about the position of the heavens that the sun occupied when you were born. In astrology, which looks at the position of the other planets, you get a nice stew of influencers, all of which are individual for each person. That, to me, makes more sense. When I look at my astrology chart (http://astro.com is a good free place to look) it helps give me a set of filters to work out more about what makes me tick. What stuff I have to work with too. Knowing that I have Leo qualities, even though I am a Scorpio makes sense of my drama moments, while the Taurus bits speak to my love of beauty and harmony. Any set of ‘signs’ can be an entertaining, and often helpful tool, so long as we don’t take them too terribly seriously. Anyhow, my two cents.

    1. I 100% agree with you on that, horoscopes are a great source of entertainment but it starts to get a bit too complicated when you begin to take them seriously. Best to just keep it light 🙂

  7. Well im sagitarian 100%. All the traits. My ex wife is pisces. Her water was no good for my fire. You and i are fire signs. Im sure we could at least have good conversations. I like your work.

  8. Reblogged this on LovelyWe and commented:
Hey Lovelies! What do you think – are horoscopes truly accurate tools for accessing our personalities and/or predicting the future, or are they just simply chock full of eery coincidences that hold subjective truths about the people we are/can potentially be? You tell me.

  9. I totally agree. It helps when you aren’t sure of how to deal with someone, cause I find that they do posses some aspect of their sign. But for mapping the future? I think you’re on the dot about having control. I guess people look to any outlet they can in an attempt to control their life.

  10. I agree that you can interpret star signs to be just about any way you like, but I do feel that my being a Scorpio may mean I am more outspoken and open to new things, while my brother who is a Pisces is sweet-natured and swims along in his life being kind and gentle.

    1. I understand what you mean. In the same way I feel like my being an Aries makes me more susceptible to being stubborn and pig-headed! But what can we do haha, thanks for stopping by 🙂

  11. It certainly is a tricky situation because I’m a Capricorn and so is my father. We’re both stubborn when it comes down to decision making but in many of the other characteristics, he doesnt follow any of them. I do love reading horoscopes just for fun and I admit I do get all giddy if something is true, but on the whole, I have no idea where I fall under, a believer or not. Like a lot of people said, maybe it does match up with certain people’s characteristics but not in predicting the future. I think the one horoscope that I read ,which absolutely made my life, was my love horoscope on january 1st 2014. Thats the day I read that 2014 could be the beginning of amazing luck in my love life. January 1st was the day I began talking to a guy…. who became my husband on January 4th, 2015. Life works wonders 🙂
