For some reason whenever people ask me what my favourite movie genre is, they always seem to automatically assume that I’ll say either romantic comedies or Disney. And so whenever I smugly break the news that I actually LOVE Italian gangster films, they’re always taken aback.
“Really? I would never guess that by looking at you” or “yeah, yeah of course you do” are the responses that I’m typically met with…but it’s true! Just because to the untrained eye I appear to be somewhat of a girly-girl, doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate storylines where people get whacked, receive kisses of death and wake up to find horses heads under their sheets; I just love the thrill!
The themes of loyalty, respect and family also massively appeal to me and no films embody such topics as well as The Godfather trilogy, A Bronx Tale, Scarface and Goodfellas. Plus I just love the unmatchable suited and booted Italian style and how silver screen mobsters like Robert De Niro, Chazz Palminteri and Ray Liotta can act in such criminal ways and yet maintain such suave demeanors throughout, you can’t help but to admire their finesse.
And if you actually pay attention to the dialogue (particularly in The Godfather movies) you can learn a lot. ‘A man that doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man’ is a great quote as well as ‘keep your friends close, but your enemies closer’. And then there’s my personal favourite, ‘leave the gun, take the cannoli!’
But I guess that ultimately my love for the mafia movies stems from the fact that ‘as far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster’. Yeah that’s right, Henry Hill’s got nothing on this Small Town Girl. 😛

No woman should like gangster films, as that is NOT socially accepted as the norm! I understand you, I have the same reactions whenever I explain that I love horror, gangster and thriller movies, NOT the romcom nonsense which is ‘usually’ the film choice of ‘all’ women! People do have such silly stereotypes regarding women!
100% agree with you there, it’s as if you’re some kind of bizarre alien if you’re a girl that likes anything but rom-coms! And I have to say that I love horror movies too, thanks for your comment 🙂

Ummm I’d have to say that it depends entirely on the lady, but if she’s an Italian gangster movie fan then I’m sure she’d love all of the classics that I’ve mentioned!
The Godfather is a masterpiece! Whenever there was a marathon playing, I automatically knew that my plans for the day were dead. Even when I had the VHS set I’d still find it hard to walk away from the tv. Rocky and the Russian have the same effect.
Ahh I can definitely relate, whenever I see that the Godfather or Scarface is on one of the movie channels I HAVE to watch it… Even though I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve seen them, I still get excited every time lol 😀
