You’re rated if you smoke, drink and do drugs

You’re a party-pooper if you choose to be sober

Guys are idolised for being players

Girls are chastised for being whores

It’s cool to have one night stands

Being a virgin is an embarrassing illness

Everyone suffers from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)

Nobody knows how to commit to anything/anyone

Everything’s fast: fast-cars, fast-money, fast-food

Patience is unheard of

Music containing profanity is blasted

Music containing profound meaning is quietened as a guilty pleasure

Twerking and grinding are all the rage

Maintaining dignity and class is unheard of

Spending money on Apple products and designer brands is rated

Spending money on books is ridiculed

Not caring and putting in minimal effort is applauded

Hard work and determination are scoffed at

No one knows of discipline

Everyone knows of bone-idleness

Everyone knows how to put themselves first

No one knows of loyalty and integrity

We all follow what everyone else is doing

No one has a sense of identity

Social media has a hold over our lives

No one can locate that de-activate button

Everyone knows how to take a good selfie

No one knows how to have a good time

Judging people is easy

Being kind to people is hard

Reputation counts for everything

Doing the right thing counts for nothing

Cliques and crews are most important

Real friends are unheard of

Violence is a testament to strength

Being the bigger person and walking away is weak

Everyone’s quick to complain

No one’s quick to make a change

Everybody demands respect

Nobody earns it, nobody gives it

This is a toxic generation.

  12. You’re very talented. I’m excited to go through more of your posts on my free time. Keep up the amazing work. From what you’ve said though you’re spot on yes some are cliches but this generation believes they are “owed” something for just being them. They don’t know how to work with their hands any more or work for anything really.

    1. Thanks so much for looking through my posts Domini Marie 🙂 I completely agree with you, much of the younger generation seem to be born with a strong sense of self-entitlement for some reason, it really needs to be stamped out!

    An interesting perspective on the present generation by someone living through it. I would add a word of comfort, this generation did not invent everything – the previous generations, mine included have a a hand in creating the future and there are times when I do not think we did a great job of it…. the one good thing about toxins is that with a robust immune system they can be diluted or expelled completely. Excellent post..

  17. Your post has just proved that this toxic society hasn’t taken over everyone. There are still many young people like yourself who reject drink, drugs and promiscuity. It’s just sad those individuals get drowned out because the badness is in our culture, particularly in the music, sports and celebrity industries. The armies of quiet, gentle folk don’t make the headlines, only people like Amy Winehouse and Paul Gasgoine do. So, don’t make the mistake of thinking you are outnumbered by them just because you hear so much about them and their lifestyle. Contrary to popular belief, they are in the minority. Power to you and those like you. Excellent post!

    1. Thanks for your comment Carole! As much as I would love to say that I’m above all of the toxicities that I’ve listed, I really can’t proclaim to be one of the saints of my generation. I’m guilty of having committed a number of the negative things that I’ve mentioned, not all, but a fair few. I feel as though it’s impossible not to get partially sucked into the ‘badness’ because as you say, icons of wayward youth behaviour are broadcast all over media outlets and their behaviour is deemed to be ‘cool’ and ‘the norm’, when of course it shouldn’t be, but that’s just the way it is.
      Ultimately I do think that a lot of my generation have messed up values, faulty consciences and misguided senses of what is right and wrong. However whether it’s us who are to blame for that, our parents, the media or society as a whole, I do not know. What I do know is that it’s important to talk about such inexplicable issues, even if we cannot find a solution to the problem at least we can raise awareness about it and perhaps through communication with one another the power of the toxins will be reduced.

      1. No-one is perfect, those who claim to be are deluding thmselves. We’d never grow as individuals if we never made mistakes we can learn from. You’re already on the right road as you are recognising where you make or made mistakes.May you continue to grow into a well balanced individual who recognises we all have failings.
